August 6, as part of the World March for Peace and Non-Violence, hundreds of cities, towns, and communities all over the world remembered the victims of the first nuclear bomb and spread awareness of the urgent need for worldwide nuclear disarmament.
Spain too saw several acts of commemoration. Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Valencia, Vigo, Valladolid, Salamanca, Coruña, Las Palmas, Seville, Elche, Aranga, Vilanova, Fisterra, Santoña, Foz, Gijon, Merida, Castelldefels... all took part organizing many different events.
There were institutional events and meetings held in the premises of many of the organizations behind the March, and, above all, there was lots of activity on the streets and in the squares. The same manifesto was read out everywhere and endorsements were collected for the World March, with each different spot making its own particular mark, leaving its own personal stamp: productions, musical performances, dance, sporting events, poetry readings, exhibitions of drawings, an invitation to onlookers to come up and state their message of peace, symbols of peace, and activities organized for children, etc.
August 6 was, without doubt, an important milestone, a fitting preliminary for the wide range of activities that will held over the three months of the March due to start October 2nd. |
