Despite the cold, a dozen young humanists dressed in pyjamas with a blanket in hand marched this afternoon from Plaza de los 33 Orientales towards Freedom Square drawing attention to the events to be held on the 2nd of October, the World Day of Nonviolence.
The International day of Nonviolence has been celebrated since 2007 and was established by the UN to honour Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, the leader of the Indian independence Movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of nonviolence.
The organisers say that the principle of nonviolence, also known as non-violent resistance, rejects the use of physical violence to achieve social and political changes. Often described as "the policy of the common person", this form of social struggle has been adopted by masses of people around the world in campaigns for social justice. |
