OAS General Secretary meets World March delegation

During the half-hour meeting De la Rubia was able to explain the development of the World March until now, its aims and objectives, and the support already coming from the American continent. Examples of the support received to date are the Chilean Government providing a special flight to connect Antarctica to the World March and the Argentinean Government providing a free peace train that will shuttle back and forth between Buenos Aires and Mendoza to take World Marchers along the final stretch of the March.

Insulza expressed his great interest and encouragement for this initiative and committed to work towards having the World March officially presented at the forthcoming Summit. The possibility to present the World March in this occasion is very opportune given that the theme of this year’s General Assembly is “Towards a culture of nonviolence”.

Having taken time from the NPT PrepCom to meet with Insulza, De la Rubia said of the meeting, "Latin America has an important role to play in disarmament, especially in nuclear disarmament with the Treaty of Tlatelolco having brought into existence one of the world's first Nuclear Free Zones - a big theme at the NPT conference - and with the new Bolivian constitution that enshrines the rejection of war as a means to resolve international conflicts being a first step on the way to progressive and proportional conventional disarmament."
